Top 5 Best Scopes For Coyote Hunting – Reviews And A Full Buyers Guide

Even though coyote hunting has been around a long time, it has gotten more popular in the last 30 or so years.  The evolution of coyote hunting gear has made it easier than ever to be successful when you go out coyote hunting.  Arguably the biggest advantage we humans have gained over coyotes in the past 20 or so years is hunting optics.  Riflescopes have improved immensely since even the early 2000s.

The best scope for coyote hunting might have been easy to decide back then but with all the scopes on the market today, it isn’t so easy.  Below we are going to go through what we think are the top 5 best scopes for coyote hunting and why we chose them.  After reading, you will feel more informed and confident about purchasing your next scope for coyote hunting.

Why Is A Good Scope Important For Coyote Hunting

A while back, a good friend asked me why I had bought a cheap rifle scope to go with a new deer hunting rifle I had just bought.  My answer was pretty simple, it was because I didn’t want to spend a lot of money.  He proceeded to tell me how he thought it was crazy that someone would pay over $1000 for a rifle, just to put a $100 scope on it.  After all, the rifle is only as good as the scope and the shooter.

I think about that conversation every single time I purchase a new scope now.  I mean, after all, he’s right.  Why would someone put a super cheap scope on a brand new rifle?  Believe me, I understand the money aspect but after all, you do get what you pay for.  That being said, there are some great companies out there making great rifle scopes that don’t cost an arm and a leg.  Those are the scopes we are going to focus on below.  Great scopes made by great companies that won’t break the bank.  But, you aren’t going to find any cheap $50 to $100 rifle scopes here.  We want to focus on quality.

In-Depth Look At Our Top 5 Best Scopes For Coyote Hunting

Heres a closer look at our picks for the top 5 best scopes for coyote hunting. They are listed in recommendation from first to last. The Vortex Viper 6.5 – 20 x50 riflescope is our number one recommendation. Followed by Leupold, Burris, another Vortex scope and lastly Athlon Optics.

Vortex Viper 6.5-20×50 SFP PA Riflescope

vortex riflescope, best scope for coyote hunting

Vortex is becoming one of the most popular optics brands in the world.  It’s easy to see why.  They have the best warranty and customer service in the business.  They make durable and cutting edge products.  And they have products that range across everyone’s budget.

Vortex Viper Riflescope Key Features

  • Magnification – 6.5 to 20
  • 50mm Objective Lens
  • Deadhold BDC Reticle
  • Durable And Rugged Design
  • Vortex VIP Warranty

Magnification

The magnification range is 6.5 to 20.  That means you have the ability to change your magnification a lot depending on how far you think you might shoot.  My scopes usually stay within the 10 to 12 range for magnification but it’s never a bad thing to have more options.  Especially if you think you might have to take a long shot at a coyote.

Objective Lens

It’s the objective lens job to let light into the scope.  The 50mm objective lens makes it perfect for those early morning coyote stands or even the late evening stands.  Most scopes objective lenses aren’t that big so that means this scope will let the maximum amount of possible light in, helping you see at dawn and dusk.

Durable and Rugged Design

The turrets are threaded and capped.  The lens have an ultra-hard Armortek coating to help prevent scratching and the scope has a hard-anodized matte black finish.

VIP Warranty

Another thing is, you can’t beat the warranty.   Vortex’s VIP warranty stands for “very important promise”.  They will repair or replace your vortex product if they become damaged or defective.  If they can’t repair them, they will replace them.   Seriously, as long as you don’t lose the scope, you won’t ever have to worry about buying a new one no matter what happens to it.

Bottom Line

The Vortex Viper 6.5-20×50 SFP PA Riflescope is a great scope for coyote hunting.  It has everything you need and nothing you don’t.  It’s a great quality scope that is priced at a point that won’t break the bank.  If you’re looking for the best scope for coyote hunting, this is our pick.

Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x40mm Side Focus Riflescope

Leupold Rifle Scope

Leupold has been a household name in the optics industry for a long time.  They have been making quality scopes and optics since the early 1900s.  They have a great reputation for making quality products at a fair price and they stand behind their work.

Leupold VX-Freedom Riflescope Key Features

  • Magnification – 4 to 12
  • 40mm Objective Lens
  • CDS Reticle
  • Leupold Lifetime Guarantee

Magnification

The magnification for the Leupold scope is 4 to 12.  That is pretty standard for your everyday rifle scope.  Don’t be deterred if you think 12 isn’t enough magnification for you because it most likely is.  Scopes with higher magnification give you the ability to see and shoot further but that doesn’t mean that most people are going to hit what they are shooting at.  Long range shooting takes practice.  Most shots you take at a coyote will be under 300 yards and a 4 to 12 magnification scope is plenty strong enough for that.

Objective Lense

A 40mm objective lens is a good size objective lens.  It will let in a lot of light if you are hunting coyotes at dawn or dusk.  Most scopes have an objective lens of 32mm, so 40mm is a bit above average.

Reticle

This scope has a tri-MOA reticle.  That means it has a hash mark on the right, the left and the bottom of the crosshairs.  These will help you when you might need to hold over a target or adjust for wind.

Leupold Lifetime Guarantee

Luepold’s lifetime guarantee, guarantees performance for life.  They will repair or replace your scope or optics if they become damaged.  You won’t need a receipt and you don’t have to be the original owner.

Bottom Line

The Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x40mm Side Focus Riflescope is another great rifle scope.  There’s a reason that Leupold has been in business for so long.  They know what they are doing and they know how to treat customers.  This scope comes in at a close second for the best scope for coyote hunting but you still can’t go wrong purchasing it.

Burris Fullfield IV 6-24x50mm Hunting Rifle Scope

burris riflescope

Burris Optics have been around since 1971.  Their founder was an engineer with Redfield Optics before branching out and starting his own optics company.

Burris Fullfield IV 6-24x50mm Hunting Rifle Scope Key Features

  • Magnification – 6 to 24
  • 50mm Objective Lens
  • SCR MOA Reticle or Fine Plex Reticle
  • Covered By The Burris Forever Warranty

Magnification

The magnification on this Burris scope is huge.  It can go from 6 all the way up to 24.  That means it’s good for basically any range of shots you need to pull off.  It’s not often that hunters take a shot at a coyote out past 400 yards but if you need to or want to try, this scope will allow you to do it.

Objective Lense

It doesn’t really get better than a 50mm objective lens. The maximum amount of light will be let into your scope allowing you to see in dark conditions.  This will be extremely valuable when coyote hunting.  Most people make their first coyote stands just as the sun is coming up and when it isn’t completely light outside.  This large of an objective will help you see the coyote and get on target quicker.

Reticle

This scope two options for the reticle.  The first is the SCR MOA Reticle.  This reticle will be extremely handy if you are planning on shooting long distances.  After you have estimated the distance or found it with a rangefinder, the MOA hashes allow you to know exactly how far over the coyote or target you will need to hold.

The Fine Plex Reticle is basically your everyday reticle without any fancy features.  That’s not to say it isn’t any good.  This reticle will be more useful if you don’t think you will be shooting long distances.  With this reticle, basically 500 yards and below would be a good range for you to take a shot in.

Burris Forever Warranty

Burris has more or less the same warranty that most big name optics companies have.  The offer a forever warranty which means that if its damaged, they will repair it or replace it.  No receipt needed, no questions asked.

Bottom Line

The Burris Fullfield IV 6-24x50mm Hunting Rifle Scope is another great rifle scope.  Burris isn’t as big as a name as Vortex or Leupold but they still make great quality scopes and optics .

Vortex Optics Diamondback Tactical First Focal Plane Riflescope

vortex diamondback rifle scope

This is the second Vortex Optics scope to make the best scope for coyote hunting list.  This scope has just a little less magnification range and a little smaller objective lens.  It does have a little bit of a better reticle than the first Vortex scope we covered.

Vortex Optics Diamondback Tactical First Focal Plane Riflescope Key Features

  • Magnification – 4 to 16
  • 44mm Objective Lens
  • EBR-2C (MOA) Reticle
  • Vortex Optics VIP Warranty

Magnification

The magnification on this Vortex scope is 4 to 16 which is pretty standard for a rifle scope.  That gives you enough manginfication to be able to take longer shots but also allows you to tone down the magnification if a long shot isn’t an option.  4 to 16 will be able to cover all your needs when you are hunting coyotes.

Objective Lense

44mm objective lens is a little smaller than the first Vortex scope we went over.  That doesn’t mean that 44mm isn’t good enough though.  This scope will still allow plenty of light into the scope.  Unless you are a trained shooter, it will be hard to tell the difference between 44mm and 50mm.

Reticle

The reticle on this scope is where it stands out.  The EBR-2C MOA reticle has hashes on both vertical and horizontal axises.  This is extremely handy when you are shooting at a coyote and you have to hold over it because it is a little far out.  It also has hashes on the horizontal for wind adjustment.

Vortex VIP Warranty

Just like all Vortex scopes, this comes with the lifetime VIP warranty.  If anything happens to it, they will replace it or fix it for free.

Bottom Line

Although this scope may not be everything the first Vortex scope we review is, it is still a great coyote hunting scope.  It has everything you need to get the job done.  It also comes with a little more affordable price tag.

Athlon Optics Argos BTR GEN2 6-24X50 First Focal Plane Riflescopes

Athlon Riflescope

Athlon Optics is one of the youngest optics brands out there. They were formed in 2014 and are headquartered out of Kansas. They have been trying to gain market share in the scope and optics industry and make some quality products.

Athlon Optics Argos BTR GEN2 6-24X50 First Focal Plane Riflescopes Key Features

  • Magnification – 6 to 24
  • 50mm Objective Lens
  • APLR2 FFP IR MOA Reticle
  • Athlon Lifetime Warranty

Magnification

This scope is another one that has a large magnification range. Just like the Burris Optics scope above it ranges from 6 to 24. It’s not likely that you will need dial up the power on the scope to 24 but like we said before, options never hurt.

Objective Lense

This scope has the same 50mm objective lens as a few others above. This will allow maximum light in the scope while you are coyote hunting, especially in those early mornings.

Reticle

This Athlon scope has an APLR2FFP IR MOA Reticle. I know, that’s kinda a mouthful but this reticle is pretty awesome. It has MOA hashes like some of the other scopes above but it stands out in one way. It has an illuminated center inside the reticle. Meaning that the crosshairs are normal (black) until you get near the center and then they switch to the MOA illuminated reticle. That’s going to come in really handy in those low light situations we run into coyote hunting a lot.

Athlon Lifetime Warranty

This scope comes with the Athlon Lifetime Warranty. This warranty is the standard warranty in the industry. They will replace or repair the scope or optics if they become damaged. They do have a few more caveats like unauthorized work and altering them in any way. Overall it is a good warranty though.

Bottom Line

Although Athlon Optics hasn’t been around for a long time, they still are cranking out some quality scopes and optics. If you are looking to switch optics companies or are just looking to give something new a try, this scope for coyote hunting would be a good choice.

Things To Consider When Choosing A Scope For Coyote Hunting

There are quite a few things you need to consider when you are buying a new scope for coyote hunting. Below we will go over what we think are the most important factors.

Magnification

Magnification is importing when you are coyote hunting because coyotes are small.  If you have to take a shot at one at a couple hundred yards away, without the proper maginifaction, it could be hard to pick them out.  Plus with the color of their fur, they blend into their surroundings really well.  I wouldn’t say that magnification is the most important thing when you are coyote hunting or when you are picking out a scope for coyote hunting but it is something you will want to consider.

Size Of Objective Lense

The size of the objective lens determines the amount of light that will be let into the scope.  Basically it determines how bright the scope will be when you are looking through it.  The more light the better.  Especially because a lot of the stands you make when you are coyote hunting will be in the early morning or late evening when the light isn’t optimal.

Durability

When deciding which scope to buy for coyote hunting, its really important to think about the durability.  We all do our best to take care of our guns and our scopes but accidents happen.  Most likely your rifle will take a tumble or at the very least, it will get bounced around in your truck or on your side by side.  This is why it’s important to pick a scope that can withstand any type of punishment and weather that coyote hunting will throw at it.

Warranty

Picking a scope with a good warranty is a must.  This isn’t usually hard because most of the reputable optics companies have good warranties.  Make sure you choose one that doesn’t require you to have a receipt and also transfers to other owners.

Best Scope For Coyote Hunting Wrap-up

There you have it, our top 5 best scopes for coyote hunting. We chose Vortex as our number one recommendation because of personal experience. I own several Vortex riflescopes and binoculars and think they have extremely well-made products. Plus having dealt with their warranty system first hand, I know what type of customer service they have.

But truth be told, any one of these scopes will work great for coyote hunting and will help you get the job done. If you are interested in hunting coyotes at night, make sure to check out our blog posts on the best night vision scopes and the best thermal scopes. And as always, happy hunting!
